Padamanabha Swamy temple – Thiruvananthpuram

DIETY-LORD VISHNU

HISTORY

The temple is thought to have ancient beginnings, as it appears in numerous historical records and scriptures from the Sangam period (3rd century BCE to 3rd century CE).
Padmanabhaswamy Temple is regarded as one of the 108 Divya Desams (holy abodes of Vishnu) recorded in the works of the Alvars, Tamil poet-saints from the 8th to 9th centuries CE.
The Venad Kingdom, which eventually became part of the Travancore princely state, patronized the temple during the medieval period, leading to its rise in significance.
The temple gained major royal sponsorship from Maharaja Marthanda Varma (1706-1758), the monarch of Travancore, who rebuilt and extended the temple complex.

FESTIVALS

Every day, the temple priests undertake elaborate rituals and poojas (worship rites) in accordance with traditional procedures. The Padmanabhaswamy Temple celebrates the Navaratri, Vishu, and Alpashy festivals.
