HISTORY
Shabarimala Temple is devoted to Lord Ayyappa, who is thought to be the son of Shiva and Mohini (an avatar of Vishnu). According to folklore, Lord Ayyappa was born to battle the demonic Mahishi, embodying a fusion of Shiva and Vishnu.
FESTIVALS
The Makaravilakku event concludes the pilgrimage season with the lighting of a ceremonial lamp at Ponnambalamedu, which is visible from Shabarimala.
The 41-day Mandalam season is the climax of pilgrimage, with devotees making the journey to seek blessings and fulfill vows.
FAMOUS AS
Shabarimala is one of the world’s most popular pilgrimage sites, receiving millions of visitors each year, particularly during the Mandalam-Makaravilakku season, which runs from November through January.
