HISTORY
The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali (Attukal Devi), a fierce form of the Goddess Parvati.According to mythology, the temple is associated with the story of Kannagi, the heroine of the Tamil epic “Silappathikaram.”The exact origins of the temple are not well-documented, but it has been a place of worship for centuries, deeply embedded in local traditions. Over time, the temple gained prominence as a center for worship and pilgrimage, particularly for women devotees.
FESTIVALS
The primary is Attukal Pongala. Held annually in the Malayalam month of Kumbham, February or March, Attukal Pongala Mahotsavam is a ten-day celebration. The traditional Kappukettu and Kudiyiruthu ceremony, which adorns the idol of Devi with Kappu (Bangles), kicks off the festival on the Karthika star.

The temple is well-known for hosting the yearly Attukal Pongal celebration, which attracts more than three million women.Attukal Pongala is a religious celebration that has been attracting millions of women every year. It is recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest gathering of women for a single event.
