DIETY-BHADRAKALI
HISTORY
At more than 2000 years old, the Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple is regarded as one of Kerala’s most ancient temples. Although other historical sources imply it may be much older, it is thought to have been founded in the seventh century AD. The temple is closely related to the epic Tamil novel “Silappatikaram,” which tells the tale of Kannagi, a woman who took revenge for her husband’s unfair death. Legend has it that Kannagi came to Kodungallur and carried out her rites there.
FESTIVALS
The main festival celebrated at the Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple is the “Bharani Festival,” which takes place during the Malayalam month of Meenam (March-April). This festival is known for its vibrant and intense rituals, including the ritualistic self-flagellation (kavu theendal) by devotees.
