DIETY-LORD SHIVA
HISTORY
The temple was constructed during the reign of Perumthachan from “Parayi petta panthirukulam”. Perumthachan is reported to have lived in the second century, hence the Koothambalam could be older than 1,600 years. Malayalam historian V. V. K. Valath describes the temple as a pre-Dravidian Kavu (shrine). Originally, the Vadakkunnathan temple housed the Paramekkavu Bhagavathi shrine as well. A new temple was built outside, and the goddess’ idol was relocated there.

Maha Shivaratri is the biggest event observed at the temple. The temple hosts cultural and musical events. Around one lakh temple lamps are lit during the occasion.
The “Aanayoottu” of feeding of elephants, is the second biggest festival held in the temple. The devotees refer to elephants as the elephant-headed god Ganesha‘s incarnation.
