Introduction

The Sun Temple of Modhera is situated in the small village of Modhera in Gujarat. Being a specimen of marvelous architectural skill, it was dedicated to the Sun God, Surya. The famous design and historical significances make the temple a foremost specimen of ancient Indian temple architecture. Elaborate sculptures, minute carvings, and a different pattern from others make it elaborate for history buffs and spiritual people in their own way.

History

It was built in 1026-27 AD by King Bhima I of the Solanki dynasty, bears testimony to the magnanimity of medieval Indian architecture. The temple was built in dedication to Surya, the Sun God, and is famous for its marvelous design and craftsmanship. The complex contains a large stepped tank, properly called the Surya Kund, used for ritual bathing. With its exquisite carvings and precise astronomical alignments, the main shrine bespeaks the high degree of development in both the arts and sciences of the time. The temple was partly destroyed through the ages and still continues to be one of the most important cultural and historical landmarks, reflecting the ingenuity and devotion of its builders.

Festivals

The main festival celebrated here is Uttarayan, or the festival of Makar Sankranti, which normally falls in the middle of January. In Uttarayan, special rituals and celebrations are performed concerning the movement or shifting of the sun towards the northern hemisphere. As for Modhera, this festival is celebrated in a grand manner when the rays of the sun trace through the exquisite carvings of the temple. The sight is an eternal magic of light and shadow. It is believed that the building of this temple draws out the astronomical precision and sanctity of the site, aligning with the sun’s rays during festivals. The building attracts lots of devotees and visitors who flock to witness the spectacular event.
