Somnath Mandir

Deity : Lord Shiva

Introduction

Somnath Temple is situated in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Saurashtra, Gujarat, and is one of the most sacred pilgrimage places in India. Renowned for its architectural excellence and spiritual significance, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the premier deity among the Trinity of Indian mythology. The first among the twelve Jyotirlingas, it holds a special position among the hearts of the believers and is an important icon of survival and faith.

History

It is believed that the Somnath Temple was originally built by the Moon God, Chandra. Throughout history, the structure has faced destruction and rebuilding many a time. Its most noted destruction occurred in the 11th century by the invasion of Mahmud of Ghazni, who pillaged the place. Later, under the patronages of the Gujarat Sultanate and the Marathas, respectively, the temple was rebuilt. It was rebuilt in 1951 during modern times under the leadership of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and signified the resurrection of Hindu civilization and unity.

Festivals

The Somnath Temple is a bustling center for religious festivals, which attracts several thousands of devotees throughout the year. The most important festivals include Maha Shivaratri-a grand festival devoted to Lord Shiva-and Kartik Purnima, signaling the full moon night in the Hindu month of Kartik. During such festivals, the temple wears a bright look with lights, flowers, and special decoration besides elaborate rituals and processions, thus creating an atmosphere of devotion and celebration.
