DIETY-GODDESS BHAGAVATHY
HISTORY
Local folklore holds that the narrative of Kannappan, a king who suffered from mental illness, is connected to the founding of Chottanikkara Temple. It is said that he saw Goddess Bhagavathy in his dreams, telling him to build a temple in her honor. The temple devoted to Goddess Bhagavathy was constructed by Kannappan following his recovery. She is worshipped here as Saraswati in the morning, Lakshmi at midday, and Durga or Bhadrakali in the evening.
FESTIVALS
The primary celebration of Chottanikkara Temple is the yearly Makam Thozhal festival, which takes place in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February–March). It draws thousands of devotees who come to seek the blessings of Goddess Bhagavathy through rituals, processions, and cultural performances (Theyyam and Thira).
