DIETY-LORD KRISHNA
HISTORY
Originally, Lord Brahma personally worshipped the idol of Lord Krishna that is now housed in the Guruvayur Temple. Afterwards, Vayu (the Wind God) and Guru (Brihaspati) moved the idol to Guruvayur, where they established it at its current location.
FESTIVALS
The primary celebrations held at this temple are the 10-day Kumbham festival in Malayalam, which begins with the raising of the flag on Pooyam star Krishna Janmashtami, or the birth of Krishna, in the month of Chingam Ekadasi, or the eleventh day of the Shukla Paksha, or bright fortnight, in the month of Vrischikam, also known as the Guruvayur Ekadasi; and Vishu, which is held on the first day of the month of Medam, which was formerly a harvest festival.
FAMOUS AS
The temple’s 38 elephants are kept in the Punnathur Kotta, sometimes called the Anakotta (or Elephant Yard in English). The world’s largest population of male Asian elephants kept in captivity is found here. The ratio of male to female elephants living at the Anakotta is skewed because devotees prefer to offer tusked male elephants. These elephants are donated to the temple.
