HISTORY
With a history spanning over 2,000 years, Thiruvanchikulam Temple is thought to be among Kerala’s oldest Shiva temples. It has been referenced in historical writings such as the Sangam literature.Local tradition holds that Lord Parashurama, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, founded the temple. It is stated that in order to atone for his transgressions, he set up the idol of Lord Shiva here and carried out penance.

The main celebration held at Thiruvanchikulam Temple is Mahashivaratri. On this important Mahashivaratri night, devotees swarm the temple to witness unique rites and prayers performed to Lord Shiva.
