DIETY-LORD SHIVA
HISTORY
It is believed that the Vaikom Temple has ancient roots that extend over 2,000 years. One of the most treasured temples connected to the Hindu epic Ramayana’s “Tataka Vadham” story—the death of the demon Tataka—is this one.
Local mythology holds that Lord Parasurama, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, founded the Vaikom Temple. It is stated that in order to atone for his transgressions, he set up the idol of Lord Shiva here and carried out penance.
The temple’s significance as a primary pilgrimage site in Kerala is highlighted by the fact that it is mentioned in both ancient Tamil Sangam literature and several historical documents.
FESTIVALS
The main celebration of Vaikom Temple is Vaikathashtami, which is held every year during the Malayalam month of Vrishchikam (November–December).Over the course of several days, the celebration features vibrant processions, traditional dance and music performances, and sacred rites performed by both priests and followers.
