DIETY –LORD SHIVA
Heading
The Sangam literature initially made reference to the temple’s existence as one of the principal temples under the Chera Dynasty. Cheras were devoted followers of Shiva. Following the fall of the Chera dynasty, the location was taken over by a small group of nobles from Narayanpur, who called it Ernakulam (a corrupt form of the original phrase, Eera Naal Kulam, which means Pond with water constantly) in honor of the temple’s well-known sacred pond. This region was soon ruled by the Kochi Kingdom.
Festivals
One of Kochi’s biggest celebrations is the Shiva temple’s Uthsavom, or temple festival, which is often held in the month of Makaram. On the first evening of the festival, there is a Kodiyettam (hoisting of the temple flag). Pakalpooram is held on the seventh day, during which the goddess is paraded around with imprisoned elephants and Panchavadyam. The festival culminates at Durbar Hall Ground with the renowned Pandimelam and vibrant fire works. In addition, there are huge celebrations for Mondays, Pradosham, Thiruvathira in the month of Dhanu, Maha Shivratri in the month of Kumbham, etc.
