HISTORY
Lord Parashurama, who is regarded as Kerala’s founder, is linked to the tale of Mannarasala’s development into one of the premier Serpent God worship centers. The Sanskrit song ‘Mandara Salodyam’ penned by Mannarasala M.G. Narayanan Namboothiri, a member of the sacred family, explains this history of Mannarasala. It is based on stories and legends passed down, as well as ancient scriptures and literature kept at the temple.
FESTIVALS
Here, Mannarasala Ayilyam is the primary temple celebration. Every serpentine idol in the grove and the temple is carried in procession to the Brahmin illom on the day of the Ayilyam asterism in the months of Kanni and Thulam (September and October), where offerings of cooked rice, Kuruthi (a red liquid made of turmeric and lime), and Nurum Palum (rice flour and milk) are made. The idol of Nagaraja is carried by Mannarasala Illom’s matriarch, and the parade is held with much fanfare and joy.
FAMOUS AS
Like most snake temples, the well-known Nagaraja temple “Mannarasala” in Haripad is tucked away in a wooded glade.The greatest such temple in Kerala, India, is the Mannarasala Temple, which features over 100,000 depictions of snakes among the trees and along the roads. In addition to coming here for worship, couples hoping to conceive come here to celebrate ceremonies of gratitude after the birth of their child, frequently bringing fresh representations of snakes as offerings.
